Sundance Resort
Book This Hotel
Located an hour south of Salt Lake City in the shadow of 12,000-foot Mount Timpanogos, this resort was founded by actor Robert Redford, who in 1969 purchased a small ski area and thousands of acres of surrounding wilderness to develop a sustainable community for the arts and a vast wilderness preserve. Structures were built with ecologically sound construction methods and materials, and the ethos is one of respect for the fragile mountain environment.
Three clusters of privately owned cabins make up the resort, along with community buildings that include two restaurants and a bar, a full-service health spa, an arts center and amphitheater, stables and outfitters, and several event venues of up to 4,200 square feet. This base area anchors 450 acres of downhill skiing and many miles of cross-country and snowshoe trails, most of which convert to hiking, mountain-biking, or horseback-riding trails in warm months.
The Sundance Art Center hosts resident and visiting artists and offers various arts workshops for guests throughout the year. Works are displayed in the Art Shack Gallery, and many handcrafted items are for sale at the Sundance General Store. During the summer, the resort hosts the Sundance Institute, a series of workshops for filmmakers, actors, and screenwriters, and in winter many of the screenings from the Sundance Film Festival take place in the 150-seat screening room. An extensive video library is available for use in guests’ in-room VCRs.
The resort’s health spa offers a variety of massages, natural skin treatments, and yoga sessions. Ski rentals, snowboards, fishing gear, and mountain bikes are all available from on-site outfitters, who also arrange horseback rides and guided trips. Also on offer are such activities as nighttime owling and wildlife snowshoe hikes guided by resident naturalists.

The resort’s 98 units occupy three clusters of rustic-exterior cottages, with no more than three units per cottage. Ecologically sound designs and construction materials have been chosen to harmonize with the mountain environment. All units are privately owned and have individualized Western/Native American decors marked by hand-hewn wood interiors and furniture and hand-woven rugs and wall hangings; many units have private patios or balconies and stone fireplaces. Welcome amenities include bottled water and handmade products from the resort’s Art Center. Bathrooms feature Aveda toiletries. Entertainment centers in all units offer cable TVs with premium channels (including the Sundance Channel, naturally), VCRs (video library available), and CD players. High-speed Ethernet connections to the Internet are complimentary, and connection kits are available.
